EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 1990

THE FLYING KARAMAZOV BROTHERS
"The Stage" 30th August 1990

Flying Kararnazov Brothers

There's more to juggling than tossing skittles in the air; where they land is important too.

The Flying Karamazov Brothers, seen at the Royal Lyceum, are not afraid to drop their spinning, spiralling projectiles in pursuit of the impossible.

Yet this musical quartet also deliberately bounce them off musical instruments, hightech and primitive alike, to create a musical, comical cabaret of acrobatics fit for children and adults.

This is ... a humanistic, warm and cheering show. From a technical point of view, the most fascinating aspect is to hear the "brothers" philosophising and casually explaining the intricacies and methods cof the act. Their tonguein-cheek attempts to place juggling in a global, secular context are delightfully unpretentious.

Never dull, friendly to hands picked out of the audience and conscious to leave them with the utmost dignity, charismatic, theatrical, they are an act to follow; to see again. Their rapport with each other, the constant smiles to each other and the audience, makes them a pleasure to watch.
